Part 43 - Jesus is with us in suffering

He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him
Psalm 91:15

How true it is, that in our darkest moments, when even talking about a problem doesn’t see enough – when there are no easy answers – it a great blessing to have a friend just be with us. This Psalm isn’t attributed to any one author as many of the Psalms are, but that doesn’t matter because the ‘I’ in verse 15 is not the Psalmist promising to answer, or be with his friend in trouble – but it is God – the Most High, the Almighty, the LORD and my God (the four different titles for God the Psalmist uses in verses 1 and 2 of the Psalm) who is the one speaking.

You may well have encountered the problem in recent weeks of speaking and not being heard, whether on Zoom or some other technology as the internet lags and tries to catch up! It’s funny for a moment, but quite frustrating as it goes on, and if it were to go on longer – terribly isolating. To speak and not be heard is very hard indeed but God hears our prayers and answers them. So call on him and know he will answer!

It may not be the answer you expect but, in our troubles, God is with us. He doesn’t promise that the troubles will be taken away, but that in those troubles He will be with us. He will be that friend that is with us, even when we don’t know what to say or pray. Of course, Jesus was on the earth – God himself made man ‘with us’ but he has left His Spirit for us today; the great Comforter as He is sometimes called. I hope you can take comfort knowing that God is with you in your trouble.
